When does knee pain need physiotherapy?

Knee pain can come from many causes. The useful question is not simply “Does it hurt?” but “What is the pain doing to movement and function?”

When assessment may help

Physiotherapy assessment can be useful when knee pain is limiting walking, stairs, sitting-to-standing, work or exercise; when stiffness or weakness persists; or when recovery after an injury or medical diagnosis is not progressing as expected.

What physiotherapy may look at

Depending on the presentation, assessment may include movement, strength, swelling, range of motion, walking pattern, activity tolerance and the tasks that matter to you. The plan should follow the findings rather than a generic knee exercise sheet.

When not to wait

Major trauma, inability to bear weight after injury, marked swelling with systemic illness, a hot red joint, severe calf symptoms, or other concerning changes need appropriate medical assessment. A website cannot determine the cause safely.

The goal is not only pain

For many patients, meaningful progress includes better walking, improved strength, increased confidence on stairs, greater load tolerance and a return toward daily activities — not only chasing a pain score.

Need individual guidance?

If symptoms are affecting movement or daily function, a physiotherapy assessment may help determine whether rehabilitation is appropriate and what the next step should be.
