Balance problems in older adults: what can contribute?

Balance is not controlled by one muscle. It depends on several systems working together, so fall risk should not be reduced to a single exercise.

Strength and movement capacity

Lower-limb strength, joint mobility, reaction time and the ability to change position all influence balance and walking safety.

Vision, sensation and medical factors

Vision, sensation, vestibular function, blood pressure responses, medication effects and neurological or cardiovascular conditions can all matter. Some causes need medical review.

The home environment matters

Lighting, loose rugs, bathroom setup, footwear, stairs and the placement of furniture can change fall risk. Home physiotherapy can sometimes reveal barriers that are not obvious in another setting.

Training should be individual

Useful rehabilitation may include strength, balance, gait, transfer practice, appropriate mobility-aid education and confidence-building. The difficulty level should be matched to safety and ability.

Need individual guidance?

If symptoms are affecting movement or daily function, a physiotherapy assessment may help determine whether rehabilitation is appropriate and what the next step should be.
